Great post, Ryan. But where's the picture of the haircut!!??

Ryan

Well, it was more of a trim! :) I would definitely post a picture if it was a massive change. That may happen soon, however.

Searching for the Yeti

I love it! All too often we forget that we are just one touch - and we think we've gotta do it all. We've got to get someone to come to church, or pray a prayer, or we have to say something profound that is going to CHANGE their life in a dramatic way - but God is moving in ways we can't even see - so sometimes it is ok just to sit in the chair and have a pleasant conversation that doesn't creep them out :)
Thanks, Ryan.

Hi Ryan. First time reader - nice blog.

The culture wars inside Christianity aren't new and they aren't going away. I recently bought Dan Kimball's "They like Jesus but not the church." In his chapter on homosexuality, the author writes that after soul-searching, he "can't dismiss that in the Bible homosexual practice is considered a sin." He welcomes gay people into his church, but only to an extent. He refused the request of a young woman who was in a lesbian relationship to teach Sunday school or have any type of leadership position, while he allowed an older lesbian woman who had decided to remain celibate (believing that being in a same-sex relationship would be immoral) to assume leadership roles. Clearly what is at stake here is not just judgmental attitudes, but how we read and interpret the Bible and how we reconcile it with present truth. On any logical grounds, is there reason to believe that homosexuality is wrong? I don't see any, especially if you're unwilling ostracize infertile straight people. So why do we insist that it is? Why are perfectly normal, healthy people told that either they must give up loving sexual relationships or else not participate in the church? Surely it's obvious how to any outsider (and a lot of us insiders) this is crazy and unacceptable behavior.

In summary, Christians aren't just perceived as incapable of rational thought and judgment - in most cases, even the most compassionate of us really do fail when reason clashes with culture and tradition.
